Maccabee Kid?

 

 

Did you ever get frustrated with a problem? Did you look for a different way to solve that challenge? Did you look “outside the box?”

 

A few thousand years ago the Maccabees were fed up with the occupying Syrian soldiers  who were bullying everyone who was Jewish and making people bow down to strange gods. The 3,000 Maccabees were outnumbered by 30,000 well-trained professional enemy soldiers.

 

The Maccabees wanted to chase the Syrian army from their Jewish homeland, but they knew that swords and shields alone were not enough to do the job.

 

They had to believe there was something stronger to help them. That something was the Almighty Presence of God, the only REAL power in the universe.

 

The Maccabees recalled a time when the Jewish people crossed the Red Sea with Moses, to escape the armies of the Egyptian pharaoh. The story of the sea parting is well known, but I loved the end of the crossing when the Jews sang a song about God being greater than anything in the Universe.

 

“Mi Kamocha Boaylim, Adonai!”

 

“There is nothing greater than God!”

 

The first letters of the words before “God” were M-K-B. This was the battle cry of the Maccabees.

 

MKB! MKB! MKB!

 

Maccabee! Maccabee! Maccabee!

 

They won their battles and won back their land, free to sing Jewish songs, celebrate Jewish customs, and practice the Jewish religion.

 

I will soon be publishing my children’s chapter book, The Maccabee Kids, which is about two children who want to be Maccabee Kids, like the Maccabee soldiers. They learn about this MKB secret –  having the powerful ally, God, to help solve their problems.

 

Whether you are a young child of seven or a senior citizen of 71 (like me), you can be a Maccabee Kid. This story tells how.

 

But, you may have already discovered this great secret. How wonderful if you can share it with other people. Please check out the blog on this site and participate in the discussion. No matter how old you are, you just might inspire someone else and give them hope. And, if you are looking for answers, maybe something another person shares will help you.

 

And, of course, when the book is finally published (Fall, 2014) you just might want to read it and share it with your loved ones.
